First Aid Questions

The first thing to determine is what reasons are you taking the course for? Is it for work or for personal reasons? Also, do you need to cover first aid skills for infants & children or only for adults? If this is for work, or for a potential job opportunity, please check with the employer or ad for the specific type of first aid course required. This will help to determine whether you should register in a WorkSafeBC Occupational First Aid course or into a Canadian Red Cross First Aid course.

Occupational First Aid Level 1:

This is a WorkSafeBC course and includes CPR Level A/AED to help adult co-workers & employees. In B.C., designated workplace first aid attendants must have a certificate that’s recognized by WorkSafeBC. This program is designed to focus on workplace accidents so only training to help adults is required.

Emergency First Aid: This is a Red Cross course and includes CPR Level C/AED, and is required by many workplaces and organizations where the focus is on first aid skills that help adults, children & infants.

First Aid Attendants must be at least 16 years old, have successfully completed a first aid training course or first aid examination developed or approved by WorkSafeBC, and have a valid first aid certificate.

Responsibilities include:

  • Promptly providing injured workers with a level of care within the scope of each attendant’s training;

  • Objectively recording reported signs & symptoms of injuries &/or exposures;

  • Referring injured workers to medical treatment if injuries are serious or beyond the scope of an attendant’s training;

  • Being physically & mentally capable of safely & effectively performing all related duties.

To Register, we need your First Name, Last Name, Email address, Phone number & Payment. People can register by phone, in person, or online. Payment Methods:

  • By phone: Visa or Mastercard

  • In person: Visa, Mastercard, Debit card or Cash

  • Online: Visa, Mastercard, Debit card, Paypal or Stripe

Registration and payment must be made before the course start date, otherwise a seat cannot be guaranteed.

Most first aid courses have no pre-requisites. However, the first aid is a physically demanding course. Candidates for OFA Level 2 and 3 must complete a Statement of Fitness before beginning the program.

  • If a participant completes a Full OFA2 or OFA3 course and is unsuccessful at the exam, he/she can pay a re-examination fee & return for training during any of the days at the next available course, then re-take the exam with that group. Re-testing must be complete within 30 days of the first attempt.

  • If a participant completes a Full OFA2 or OFA3 course and does not feel ready to take the exam, he/she can return for training during any of the days at the next available course (at no extra charge), then take the exam with that group.

Yes, after paying an examination fee, the participant can participate any days during the next available training course, and re-take the exam with that group.

Valid identification, and information regarding the previous exam attempt(s) at other agencies will be requested. Candidates are only permitted 2 attempts total. If still unsuccessful, candidates must take the entire program over again

The official’s name will be printed next to or under the signature and will include their contact information & their position within the company. This letter must state that the employee is who he or she claims to be, or

  • A letter from the sponsoring agency (if the candidate is unemployed), typed on the agency’s letterhead & signed by an official of the agency. First aid attendants are a lifeline for those who become injured or ill in the workplace. WorkSafeBC regularly reviews the occupational first aid training program to ensure that it is keeping up with best practices. In order to cover a broader spectrum of medical issues, and align treatment protocols with Canadian and international best practices, occupational first aid training requirements are changing on JULY 1, 2018.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Current certification remains valid until the expiry date on the certificate;

  • There will no longer be an extra exam day for OFA Level 2 or OFA Level 3. The written & practical exams will be conducted within the Level 2 five day program, and within the Level 3 ten day program;

  • In OFA Level 2 or 3, if a participant is unsuccessful with the written or practical exam, they are allowed to do a second attempt after at least 24 hours. Candidates must complete their second attempt within 30 days;

  • If a participant fails any part of the written, oral, or practical examination, he/she must redo only the failed portion of the examination again in its entirety (written, oral, AND/OR practical);

  • There will only be 12 participants permitted per class in the new OFA Level 2 and OFA Level 3 program. OFA Level 1 will still permit a maximum of 18 participants per class;

  • Effective July 1, 2018 all candidates that have completed the training requirements of the (Legacy program) OFA Level 2 or OFA Level 3 course, and are not successful, or have not taken the exam yet, have until August 3, 2018 to complete the Legacy program examination;

  • Students that have lost a certificate in the Legacy (old) program after July 1, 2018, must be issued a Legacy replacement certificate with the same expiry date as the original certificate;

  • The new certificates, which have a different look, will be issued beginning July 1, 2018, for those who are renewing or taking training for the first time, new certificates will be valid for 3 years;

  • First aid attendants have the option of taking supplementary training to upgrade their skills; however, they will only receive a new certificate if they complete the new training program in its entirety;

  • As part of the process, the Occupational Health and Safety Guidelines are also being reviewed and updated. More information about this will be provided in the coming months. For more information on the changes, see New first aid training requirements on the WorkSafeBC website.
