WHMIS – or the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System is the national standard in Canada for identifying and labelling hazardous materials which may be found in the workplace. It was developed by both provincial and federal governments to help ensure the safety of Canadian workers when dealing with dangerous materials. For most employers in Canada, training employees in WHMIS is mandated by legislation which is enforced by the provincial Ministry of Labour.
ProSafe First Aid Training School offers a 3 hour course in WHMIS, which after passing an evaluation will certify your employees for three years.

Most employers are required by law to supply WHMIS training to their employees. This includes all workplaces which are governed by the Occupational Health and Safety Act as well as all federal government workplaces. But even if your workplace falls outside of these parameters, there is good reason for voluntary training. The course is designed to teach employees about hazardous materials in the workplace and the proper labelling of those materials.
Having employees who have this knowledge and training will go a long way to help prevent potentially serious accidents and health threats which may result from exposure to hazardous materials. Sadly, there are many work related accidents – some serious – across our country each year. Many of these accidents could have been prevented had employees and their supervisors had the proper training.

According to provincial and federal law, both employees and employers have a responsibility to ensure a safe workplace. Part of ensuring safety for all workers is proper training and education to make sure that everyone on the job site is aware of any potential hazards and knows how to minimize them.
Workplaces are subject to inspection from the Ministry of Labour. During inspections, inspectors will be looking primarily to ensure that hazardous materials are properly labelled and that Material Safety Data Sheets are readily available.

Certification

Upon completing the course, students will be evaluated by the instructor and given a test to complete. Upon successful completion, students will be give certification which is valid for three years.
