MarketSafe is for farmers, food processors, and producers who make, bake or grow products to sell at local farmers’ markets, farm gates or other types of temporary food markets

MarketSafe was developed by the BC FOODSAFE Secretariat in partnership with the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets and is supported by the Regional Health Authorities, the BC Centre for Disease Control, and the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Lands.

The Goal of MARKETSAFE

This program was created to increase awareness and knowledge of food safety and safe food handling procedures for farmers’ market vendors, market managers, farm-gate vendors, home kitchen, small scale food processors, and others who may make, bake or produce food products for public consumption outside of regulated food service establishments. As well as trying to protect the general public, this education program will also help individuals who want to sell their wares to become trusted and successful vendors.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]What MARKETSAFE can do for you!

Some people shop at farmers markets to find safer, more wholesome food. Customers appreciate the small number of production points, local sourcing, responsible growing practices, familiar faces, and fresh food. Yet, terrible things such as these incidents can still occur at farmers markets:

For example:

  • Food sampling can lead to an outbreak of E. coli.
  • A prepared food vendor could be shut down for unsafe practices.
  • An animal could contaminate a berry field, leading to hospitalizations and even death. If these berries are sold at farm stands and farmers markets, the source can be difficult to pin down, leading to a loss in sales for a national crop.

Vendors, Farmers, Market Managers and home kitchen small scale food vendors participating in a Marketsafe course will take a huge step forward in their understanding of safe food handling and distribution when supplying the general public in their communities. While protecting patrons from illness is the priority, participants will also become educated on the expectation of many local Market Managers within the community, becoming successful and sought out vendors[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space height=”10px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1432447605538{background-color: #ffffff !important;}”][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”10px”][vc_column_text]

IS CERTIFICATION REQUIRED?

[/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=”custom” el_width=”50″ accent_color=”#e52626″][vc_column_text]MarketSafe certification is not a legislated requirement; however, some Markets do require their vendors to have a valid MarketSafe certificate. The MarketSafe course is not equivalent to FOODSAFE Level 1.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”10px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]
