Canadian Red Cross Stay Safe! Training: Empowering BC Kids for Independence

As children grow and gain more independence, there comes a point where they may find themselves at home alone for a few hours after school or while parents run errands. While many parents are familiar with the classic “Babysitting” course, there is a relatively new and essential program that most remain unaware of: the Canadian Red Cross Stay Safe! course. Launched in 2021, this course was specifically designed to bridge the gap for youth ages 9 to 13 who aren’t quite ready to babysit others but are ready to start staying home on their own.

The Stay Safe! program focuses on empowering young people with the confidence and skills needed to handle the unexpected. Unlike more advanced courses, this curriculum is tailored to the “home alone” experience, teaching kids how to set and follow safety rules, manage digital safety, and respond to strangers or unanticipated visits. It’s about moving from a place of “watching the clock” to being a responsible, accountable young person who knows exactly what to do if the power goes out or if they encounter a minor emergency.

In addition to safety protocols, the course provides a foundational “Check, Call, Care” first aid component. Participants learn how to handle common situations like minor cuts, bee stings, and even more serious scenarios like choking or using an inhaler. By the end of the day, your child isn’t just “staying safe”—they are gaining a sense of leadership and maturity that prepares them for the next stage of their lives. It’s the ultimate peace of mind for parents who want to ensure their children are equipped with more than just a cell phone.
